Community Mental Health
Training for group home workers is available at Mott Community
College.
In this intensive 80 hour
program students will attend classes
Monday though Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. for four (4)
weeks. Training will take place at the Garfield G. Wagner/ Workforce Education Center.
Upon successful completion of this program each participant will
be:
- Direct Care Worker Certified
- CMH Trained
- Adult CPR & First Aid

| CPR |
This unit focuses on the performance of adult Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Foreign Body Airway Obstruction (FBAO) management. The material presented in this unit will follow CPR course requirements developed by the American Red Cross. |

| Environmental Emergency |
This module focuses on the prevention, preparation and response to environmental emergencies and hazards. It contains a variety of topics and responsibilities of direct care staff to maintain a safe environment at the home, as well as the role of direct care staff in teaching persons with disabilities and how to be prepared in emergencies. Topics include: preparing for emergencies, safe driving techniques, emergencies in the home, fire safety and training. |

| Nutrition & Food Service |
This module focuses on nutrition related issues and the responsibilities of direct care staff when providing or supporting nutrition services to persons who are mentally ill or developmentally disabled. Topics included in the module are: basic nutrition, nutrition related issues, meal times, choice and independence, shopping, food storage, food preparation, kitchen cleanup and kitchen safety. |

| Health |
This module focuses on an overview of the major body systems and common diseases of these systems. Skills learned in this module include: bathing, oral care, skin care, mail care, vital signs, height and weight, catheter care, Intake & Output, ROM, turning, repositioning and transfer skills. |

| Residential Services |
This module introduces the trainee to the role of the direct care staff person. It contains a variety of topics that match the diversity of the direct care role and the responsibilities that direct care staff have when providing services to persons who are mentally ill or developmentally disabled. Topics include: Limited English Proficiency (LEP), the Philosophy and Role of Residential Services, the influence of values, attitudes and beliefs on service delivery systems, definitions, cultural competency, the importance of flexibility and choice, the principles of change, the I-Team and plan of service, documentation, active treatment and environment for growth. |

| Medications |
This module introduces the trainee to their role in supporting the overall physical health of the person. It contains a variety of topics related to the assessment and maintenance of a person’s health and the administration of medications. Skills taught in this module include the 20 steps of medication administration, measurement of temperature, pulse, respiration and blood pressure. Topics include: seizures, seizure first aid, infectious disease prevention, medication use, effects, dangers and administration, legal issues and documentation. |

| Physical & Non-Physical Interventions |
This unit focuses on your roles and responsibilities as community direct care staff in helping the recipient maintain and modify his/her behavior. The purpose of this unit is to provide opportunities for you to understand and become familiar with a wide range of techniques to help the recipient achieve greater independence and to help them learn appropriate ways of coping effectively with the demands of community living. Topics included: intervention intervening, range from observing behavior to avoiding confrontations and physically intervening. A major emphasis of this unit is the importance of staff remaining flexible and being able to apply techniques appropriate to the situation and the needs of the recipients in order to help them learn to control their own behavior. |

| Working with People I & II |
Module I & II introduce the trainee to the hierarchy of human needs and examines the expression of those needs by persons with disabilities. Trainees will discover the role of the principles of “effective teaching”, building a positive relationship between the caregiver and the individual. Topics include: crisis planning, understanding why there has been a struggle to achieve human needs, values and guiding principles, understanding the people you work with, how people relate to people, places and things, staff roles and responsibilities, teaching functional skills, teaching strategies, recognizing examples of reward, recognizing the role of the caregiver as that of teacher, causes of challenging behavior, confrontation avoidance techniques, positive behavior support plans and proactive options. |
