Chemistry-Chemical Engineering

Associate in Science

Chemistry is the science that deals with the identification of the substances of which matter is composed, the investigation of their properties and the ways in which they interact, combine, and change, and the use of these processes to form new substances. Success in chemistry requires a firm grounding across the sciences but especially in physics, mathematics and biology. In addition to the chemistry courses required for all chemistry majors, the MCC chemistry curriculum also offers courses in the analysis of environmental pollutants and forensic chemistry. Under the direction of full-time chemistry faculty, interested students have the opportunity to perform original research and submit results for publication. Students taking part in research will also have the opportunity to forge bonds with faculty at local universities as many of the projects involve interacting with chemistry faculty at a four-year university. Chemistry is known as the Central Science because all science is ultimately related to chemistry. The broad applicability of phenomena and the rigorous methodology of chemistry provide a wide range of careers for chemistry majors. Many of our graduates have careers in medicine, veterinary science, pharmacy, chemistry, engineering and teaching as well as many others.

Program Information

Although not required for an AS degree at Mott, students planning on majoring in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering should complete MATH 250 (Multivariable Calculus) and MATH 280 (Differential Equations) either at Mott before transferring or during the first two semesters at the four-year college.

Degree Pathway starting with MATH-145

If you do not place into MATH-170 (Analytic Geometry and Calculus I), please consult this course pathway which begins with MATH-145 (Pre-Calculus) and consult with a faculty member or academic adviser.
